These things are awesome! I don't mean to make it seem like I'm trying to steal from you, but I'm currently brainstorming a fanfic that involves airships, and this general design idea is what I've been looking for. I promise not to make a direct copy of your vision. Anyway, how did you design these? What were the inspirations? How would you describe their shapes and structure?

Wow... okay, ummm...

1) Don't worry too much about copying me. The truth is, I have my own sources of inspiration... we all copy someone else to some degree... as long as you put your own spin on it, you'll be fine. =)

2) How I designed these ships: I took a single concept and developed it as much as I could. Those "fish fin-like extensions" are supposedly magical propelling devices. The fins extend outwards from a mechanism that "moves them around". So the ships kinda swim through the air... more or less like a fish would swim through water. So I took that idea and tried to flesh out what various ships, with different functions, would look like... for over all consistency of my fantasy world. ^_~

3) I think my inspirations for these ships come mainly from Fanal Fantasy VI... but also stuff like Vision of Escaflown... and all the awesome references I found right here in devinatART, lol. XD

4) Shape and Structure? Hmmm... well, "fish-like"... especially in movement. Most of them are made of wood, with metal bolts and bars for reinforcement. Only that military one is more heavily armoured, witch also makes it slow as hell. The fins are made of a silky material, very delicate. In combat, they are the main target... though military ships have magical ward mechanism protecting their fins (I think I kinda came up with that on the fly, just now, but it makes sense, right?)...

Additional note: The fins are responsible for movement, but not flight. These ships have "skystone" core engines... in my fantasy world there are these floating rocks, some the size of mountains... I call them skyrocks or skystones. The civilisation living in this world has learned how to harness that magical power. It's based on "heat", the hotter the skystone gets the higher it goes... so there's this furnace room inside the ship...

Man, I could go on for hours about these ships... I'll stop here. Let me know if you want to know more. Lol!

Would this happen to be a webcomic I could read somewhere?

Sadly, no... I never got around to publishing anything about this or putting anything online.

Pretty good isometric views, but because I'm feeling misspelled "Imperial."

Lol! Yeah I know, and I misspelled it twice... but I never went back to fix that. I submitted this back in 2007...

Anyways, thanks.

The designs are very nice, and I concur I too would be interested to reading your comic. Don't let the fear of someone stealing your ideas control what you do, go for it get the comic out.

An old trick I've heard is to mail the originals to yourself, leave the envelope unopened, the envelope is date stamped by the post office so if you can proof the date of your designs. Not sure if this would still be workable these in the modern world, I guess with postal automation you could send an empty unsealed envelope.

Although in this technological ages the images can of course be digitally and invisibly marked so that even after manipulation and conversion to different formats the image can be identified. I know of a company that has bots searching for these image tags across the web, then they send out demands for payment when their own images have been found. Good luck and if my advice has been helpful, design me an avatar that washed out smiley face to the left looks so sad ! 8-)

Wow! I'm not so worried about people stealing my stuff. But thanks for the detailed suggestions.

Anyways, I'm glad you liked the designs. I did an update a while back... these are actually the old versions. Heh.

And about the comic... It's a book now, +200 pages... almost finished. ^_^

You have a comic? Is it online? Can I reads it? :XD:

The last ship (The fighter.) looks like something from Last Exile. You ever hear of it?
alexsanlyra Featured By Owner Feb 14, 2007  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Yes, I have a comic... it's not on-line... it's in portuguese... I want to translate and submit it to the web, but I have several dificulties in that department... copyrights is one thing that scares me a bit too.

Yeas! You got me, that 2 man airfighter is inspired by Last Exile... though I have to say, I thought of it before I saw the anime... the anime only influenced the design. XD

You are... Portuguese?! :O

What? Since when. (Probably since you were born.)
I don't understand how there could be any problem with copyright if it is YOUR comic. Unless you just draw it or sompin'. And if you are worried about copyright INFRINGEMENT... well my webcomic is all copyright infringement and I still haven't gotten into trouble.

And yea-yeah! Last Exile is teh Awesomesauce.
alexsanlyra Featured By Owner Feb 16, 2007  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I guess I worried some might steal the names I created, the story line... or something and some day, when I will want to publish it for real someone else will have the copyrights... I know... I paranoid. =P

I'm brasilian actually. Ever since I was born too. ^_^ And Brasil, being colonized by Portugal, is a portuguese speaking country. Heh. I lived in the US for 6 years when I was a kid... Dat's wer I lern mi perfecte inglish.

This pic, is, Killer! They're all so clear and well shaded, and depict their role nicely! Greito Job!
My only wish right now would be to see ships of 'other races', if you have any^^
alexsanlyra Featured By Owner Feb 14, 2007  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Well it's like this... the Castelian empire is the only evolved nation were flying ships is a every day thing. They are the ones that go explore and discover the other worlds... so you see... there couldn't be any other airships from other races... at least no yet in the story. XD
